Colorado Community College Courses
Objective: Develop a series of courses to be hosted in the WebCT course management system for the Colorado Community College System. The courses should follow a basic template for consistency. Content was to be provided by faculty content experts.
Process: Our design team developed a course template which laid out the general left-hand WebCT navigation. Each course followed the basic template with the intent that students enrolling in multiple courses would become accustomed to the layout and have less of a learning curve with each new course. The team also created a set of icons to be used in all courses to achieve a similar look and navigation. Certain basic components were required in each course, including a syllabus, schedule, and unit objectives.
Each unit was required to provide a clear listing of assignments.
Some courses included special resources or exercises that did not fit into any given template. In these cases, the special page could utilize a non-standard layout and graphics.
WebCT courses were launched between June 2002 and January 2005. Courses were designed using Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and UltraEdit (CSS) and adapted to function in WebCT. I was the production manager for over twenty-five courses, responsible for information architecture, instructional design, HTML coding, CSS, WebCT interface development, graphics development, and Section 508 requirements compliance.
